Introduction
NUCREL™ is an ethylene methacrylic acid copolymer manufactured and sold by Dow-Mitsui Polychemicals using the Dow Chemical Company technologies.
Since NUCREL™ contains polar groups in its molecular chain, in addition to toughness and flexibility it features excellent adhesion to glass, metals, etc.
Features
1. Toughness
As NUCREL™ has strong intermolecular bonds due to hydrogen bonding between carboxyl groups, it possesses a strength similar to ionomers and particularly excels in low-temperature impact resistance.
2. Flexibility
As NUCREL™ is an ethylene copolymer, it has moderate flexibility.
3. Adhesion to metal and glass
Since NUCREL™ contains polar, carboxyl groups, within its molecular chain, it exhibits excellent adhesion to metals such as aluminum foil and glass.
4. Thermal stability
NUCREL™ belongs to a category of ethylene copolymers with excellent thermal stability, is relatively stable against heat, and can be molded at temperatures of 300°C and higher depending on the processing method.
5. Weather resistance
As NUCREL™ is an ethylene copolymer, excellent weather resistance can be obtained by blending it with carbon black or a UV absorber.
6. Moisture absorbency
As NUCREL™ is not moisture absorbent, resin handling is simple.
7. Suitability as a packaging material
NUCREL™ is suitable as a sealant resin for packaging materials due to its excellent performance with various areas, including metal adhesion, heat sealing and hot tack properties.
